Manchester 24

11 November 2004 to 4 January 2005

This exhibition was a window on the world of 40 different inhabitants of the city. Each told a unique story, experienced through the lens of an original cult Russian Lomo camera, with each participant shooting their life on one role of film in the space of 24 hours.

From the early morning street sweepers who clean our absent city before anyone opens their eyes, to the city’s celebs and nightlife players, the exhibition told the story of real Manchester people, including an airline pilot, a taxi driver, a high-rise window cleaner, as well as more well known Mancunians such as Tony Wilson and Badly Drawn Boy.

These unplanned and off-the-cuff snapshots were a window into what it means to live, work and play in Manchester.

Created in partnership with Stolichnaya vodka.

Press Comments

“Every Mancunian should get down to see Manchester 24. It is a genuine look into the heart, the mind and the bowels of the city and while some of the pictures may be a little contrived, there’s a sense of honesty, pride and humour that beams out of the majority of what’s on offer. From Tom Hingley’s snap of his daughter in a sulk, through Michael Trainer stood seriously next to his cow creation, and out to Effie Kanyua out on the town, there is a familiar yet enlightening moment in almost every contributor’s work. Go along prepared to smile and be surprised.”
